This update still gives me no sound (no sound device in Windows XP, greyed out...)

You've got something wrong - I've had sound in every version, this included.
I think you need to start from scratch and make a new image.
Are you remembering to install the updated tools?

Are you sure you manually added the sound option to your virtual machine config? This was the reason I had no sound for long time on my MBP.

So you have to edit the VM when Windows in not running, click on "Add..." and from the Wizard pick the sound card. It also might help if you have configured one to remove it first with the "Remove" button, and then re-add it.

Afterward, you might have to re-install the Parallels tools from the menu. At least, that worked for me.
