After evaluating this software I arranged for a 10 user license for my company. We have a mix of Mac and PC and the cross platform aspect of this product was very appealing. I will state briefly that this software detected viruses missed by the "biggest name" AV offering and uses far less resources. Now back to Mac. After downloading the EICAR test virus and hiding it in what I thought were clever locations Sophos found it 100% of the time. So the software works. And because I DO NOT WANT any malware garbage on my Macs I will continue to pay for and use a product that many feel is uneccessary. I feel the same way about car insurance. I know I will never have an accident. And I know that there are no malcontents with skills so great that our platform will ever be threatened. Right. I believe its coming, and Apple may have cracked the door themselves with the compatibility apps on the Intel machines. I also believe that I have a responsibilty to not propagate or facilitate the spread of malware. Lastly, with so many in our community opposed to AV products is it any wonder that most of what is offered to us is dubious. Sophos offers a competent product to the enterprise or small business environment. It probably isn't much of a reach to imagine they could offer a desktop variant with little effort. But who wants a client base that begins with resentment and suspicion?

Well said, that Man! I TOTALLY agree: I know people who have been Mac addicts for 12-20 years and claim to have never seen a virus; a number of failures, recently, out here in Cyprus (a crashing eMac, Titanium and Aluminium PowerBook G4s and a MacBook Pro) lead me to believe that something fishy is going on! I, therefore - for one, am going to find a suitable AV software solution for home use.Monday, March 10 2008 @ 03:50 AM PDT

I very rarely respond to comments, but this paragraph is so bright, articulate, incisive, and persuasive I felt I had to congratulate the author. The last sentence proposing that Sophos does not want to get into the retail business because of the petulance of retail customers--whether true or not--is an idea that would only occur to a person who thinks.Thank you!

I don't think the previous two posters got the reference to retail customers.Monday, November 02 2009 @ 05:27 AM PST

This glorious review seems makes me suspicious. The reviewer could be a Sophos employee.Reply to This
