After installing 10.4.8 without incident a few minutes ago, I noticed that in the "About This Mac" window and in the "System Profiler", the serial number is no longer shown.

Mac serial number gone - Will Fiveash

Try clicking on the info just below the "Mac OS X" logo. It toggles what is shown. I bet that is what is going on with the missing serial #.

Sometimes.... - jkb4

If your computer has been taken in for repairs, and they replace the motherboard/logic board, the serial number no longer shows up.
