Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: YES

I was extremely disappointed when I downloaded iTunes 7 and it broke Volume Logic. I mooned about for a week or so, frequently checking to see when the new version's coming out, wondering if I could join the public beta, etc., then a funny thing happened:

I've just installed Apple's new security update (Security Update 2006-005 (10.4.7 PPC)), and the Airport update (AirPort Update 2006-001), and I swear to God, one of those fixed Volume Logic!! It works now! I'm not sure which of the updates fixed it (neither one makes much sense, really), but all I did was install 'em, repair permissions, restart, and VOILA!

Let me say that again, just to be clear: Installing Apple's most recent Security & Airport updates, followed by a permissions repair, seems to have fixed Volume Logic for me!

Yes, I'm running Mac OS 10.4.7. Yes, I'm running iTunes 7, and the latest Quicktime.

TRY IT!! WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE????

Works now for iTunes 7 after security update????? - Lady_Xoc

O.K., UPDATE:

I was wrong: it's not either of the updates. It was pure coincidence that I found the "fix" after I'd installed them. Or maybe all that crack I was smoking...

What DOES work is changing which device that you're sending iTunes signal to, and changing it back. For instance, if you're sending it to 'Computer,' switch to 'Living Room Speakers,' (or whatever you're calling your remote speakers) for a few seconds, then switch back to 'Computer' (which is what you're using anyway if you're using VL).

This actually does work. It's not the same as having VL work flawlessly, since you have to do it each time you launch iTunes, but it's something...

Hi, Could you elaborate on your fix. What do you mean "what you're sending iTunes to"?

I've been using iTunes for years and I have no idea what you're talking about. Is this a new feature with 7.0?

Where can I find this setting, exactly, I'd love to try your work-around.

Thanks.

Wow, I'm so sorry for the triple post. Every time I hit submit it gave me a connection error.

I don't know how you're doing it, but I'm sending my iTunes signal to my home speakers via an Airport Express. In order to do that, I've got the 'Look for remote speakers connected with Airtunes' box checked in:

iTunes==>Preferences==>General. (it's underneath the 'Streaming Buffer Size' pulldown.

With that box checked, you should see a new pulldown menu in
the bottom-right corner of the main iTunes window (next to the 'Browse quickly' button), showing your list of available outputs ('Computer' is the first, then, for example, 'Living Room Speakers,' etc...). It's this list that you switch between in order to get Volume Logic to work.

Backing up a half-step: When I first got my Airport Express, I'd set up iTunes to broadcast straight to it via AirTunes, so I'd created a 'Living Room Speakers' profile. Later, in order to be able to send a Volume-Logic-processed signal to my Airport Express box, I had to bypass Airtunes by using Airfoil, which means that I'm now sending iTunes' signal to 'Computer,' which is where Airfoil picks up the signal and sends it to the Airport box.

So basically, I've now got two ways I can send iTunes music to my living room speakers: straight through AirTunes (using my 'Living Room Speakers' profile), or through Airfoil (using the default 'Computer' profile), which is what I have to do to have Volume Logic process my audio. Toggling between these two is some equivalent of 'jiggling a few wires around,' I think. Whatever, it works.

When I first launch iTunes, Volume Logic doesn't work. But switching from 'Computer' to 'Living Room Speakers,' and then back to 'Computer' again seems to wake up Volume Logic, and it goes about working its wonderful magic!

I'm not sure if there's a way to make this work if you're NOT using Airport, though. I think you can still check the 'Look for Remote Speakers' box, and maybe set up a dummy 'Living Room Speaker' profile? I dunno...

I hope this long rambling mess has been at least somewhat helpful Good luck!!

Thanks for the detailed reply (this is the same person, different account).

It sounds like you have to have Airtunes for those options to show up. If I turn on the the "look for other speakers" there still are no options on the main window of iTunes.

I wonder if this might be useful information for Octiv, though? Maybe you could drop them a short email telling them about this workaround. Perhaps it would help them get a fix out the door.

I just tried switching outputs in System Preferences -> Sound -> Outputs and to my surprise, VL came back to life again! I switched between my Digidesign CoreAudio Output and the standard Mac output. Quitting iTunes kills VL again by the way. Anyone know where apple stores it's sound preferences? I can't seem to find them. Maybe trashing them could help? I'll definately drop them a line. Still there is no update available, but they are working on it they say.
