The only useful messenger I know is Yahoo!Messenger
It's the only one that allows to choose
individually from the list who can see you or not when you are online!
What's this idea that people reach Nirvana happiness when they open their chat and find everybody online???

You could try opening the preferences and clicking the security tab. Then pick your poison.
