Downloaded directly from Apple. Songs, podcasts are not playing. The play button changes to a pause button and vice versa, but there is no sound and no movement of the progress indicator. OS 10.4.7 on a dual 2.5 ghz G5.

Did you install QuickTime 7.1.3?Also... if you have OSS 3D installed iTunes 7.0 will not playback audio.
You can delete OSS 3D by going to /Library/iTunes/Plug-ins/ and deleting the OSS plug.

wow..THANK YOU!Yes, I had installed QT 7.13 but also had the OSS 3D... now trashed. Works perfectly now. Would have been nice to know about this prior.
