I agree that Mellel is probably not the best choice if you need a word-processor for reading Word files sent by fun-loving colleagues, or for typing a letter to your grandmother every Xmas.

Mellel can do that too. But it's not meant to do "only" that.

Mellel is a WP you'd use for professional writing (academic or other): it's elegant, very flexible, offers an efficient and ever-improving feature-set, it's stable and, above all, it's superbly crafted. If "enlightened" were an adjective that could be applied to a WP, Mellel should get it. The developers have a knack for presenting an approach to word processing that is logical, solid and designed to be used: you may have to spend a little time reading the manual every now and then, but it is worth every second of it.

Rarely do I have the feeling that I'm in command when I use a WP; with Mellel this is just what happens. Mellel allows a demanding user to be and to stay in control of his/her writing and output.

For me, this word processor is becoming the GUI-minded and user-friendly version of LaTeX: plenty of power and flexibility, less worries.

Mellel ... the user-friendly LaTeX? - dylan3--2008

I agree that's where Mellel is headed (which is why I bought a copy!), but it's not there yet -- for example, Mellel doesn't yet support cross references, which is a pretty basic LaTeX capability, and is absolutely required for any kind of "structured document" application. It's on the road map, and the developer says it's coming (been promised for months now), but it's not there yet....

I bought a license for Mellel(1) so don't take this the wrong way...

Have you tried LyX? (Google it).

If you're a fan of LaTeX then you owe it to yourself to install LyX.

Just a thought.

(1) And Ulysses, and Nisus Writer, and Jer's Novel Writer, and CopyWrite, and Word 2004, and some others that I just can't seem to remember right now. Funny though, I keep coming back to LyX and LaTeX for really complex documents.
