This is actually a review of the latest release, not the incompetent computer users struggling with .hqx (a very reliable file wrapper, by the way).
Downloaded and converted the .hqx to .dmg with Stuffit (another maligned program that does exactly what it should, but suffers from a lack of eye candy sufficient for the graphically-addicted here).
Opened the .dmg (here's a hint: try double-clicking on it with the mouse).
Installed without complaint in well under a minute.
Newer version reports itself as 15.0.4 -R5.
Crashing upon editing entries for stocks seems to have gone away. Naturally, it is too soon to tell if other bugs are out. One remaining headache is that Quicken still can only do stocks to the fourth decimal place. Some shares are broken down to the fifth, so Quicken introduces rounding errors. It'd be appreciated if Intuit could fix this (I've been asking for over 3 years and versions now). It is, after all, an accounting program so math kind of matters. One star off for that. The rest -- works as advertised. Pity people can't eval the software based on what it does, rather than their unfamiliarity with their computers. The point-n-click mac-mac crowd: you are why Windows users don't take this platform seriously for the excellent computer it is.

No one has said hqx isn't a reliable file wrapper.Nor have I seen anyone say that Stuffit isn't a decent program.
What people have been complaining about is that Intuit posted this updater with the wrong file extension. So, downloading it and double-clicking it simply did not work. Until someone guessed that the extension needed to be manually changed to ".dmg", this looked like a very busted updater.
And this isn't the first time that Intuit has made such mistakes (or much worse ones) with its updaters. If they can't get such simple things right, it doesn't leave customers with a lot of confience in the supposed bug fixes inside the updater.

Has anyone visited his website? His "newsletter" was last updated in June 2000, and 99% of the postings in his "Forums" section were written by him! It's nice to have your own forum, I suppose. Perhaps it's a more appropriate place to rant and be derogatory to others.Saturday, September 09 2006 @ 10:21 AM PDT
Updater NOW works fine - MacSavvy29
Paul Vail's superior, know it all comment grated. The first update available yesterday (not yet listed on VersionTracker) was 5.8 MB and had problems unstuffing. Tried all combinations with Stuffit Expander (I agree it's a great program). The tip on using Disk Utility did work. The revised R5 update linked on VersionTracker, or on Quicken's site is now 7.9 MB and unstuffs easily. Paul's comments on the update are welcome, but we could do without his "incompetent computer users" insult; it detracts from his otherwise useful post.Reply to This
