The freeware mentioned below by user Stormchild has last been updated in 2002.
a.) It does not create codes with Addon that you need for ISBNs.
b.) Obviously, it also does not create the new ISBN 13 barcodes (which have been introduced only last year).
c.) It does not create CMYK output which you need if you want to professionally print or typeset barcodes without prior conversion.

Wrong again - Barcode For Mac
The Addon for ISBN codes (ISBN 10 and ISBN 13) is a separate satellite barcode, not simply a matter of adding "a couple extra digits". It's required for ISBN barcodes to encode pricing, currency etc.The UPC-A freeware generator you mention creates yet another barcode type.
We have an extensive know how and FAQ section on our website (http://www.pro-barcode.com/knowhow.html); perhaps you want to refresh your knowledge about the various types of barcodes before comparing apples and orange.

Wow, I'm convinced! - Stormchild
Now there's a solid set of reasons to pay $80. You don't have to add a couple extra digits manually. And wow, it outputs in CMYK. Outstanding! That'll save you the 10 seconds it would take to change the color mode yourself. By the way, you don't "typeset" barcodes. "Typesetting" means "setting type".Here's another freeware option, updated more recently.

To be fair, many of the other barcode programs cost twice as much, which is an even bigger rip off. But that doesn't change the fact that this particular program costs a LOT more than it should. This is a one-trick pony, guys; it's worth maybe $20 at the very most.
