Yes, it takes a few minutes of reading the instructions, and a few more minutes of experimenting to get the hang of it. And, yes, it gets easier the more you use it - both because you learn it's fine points, and it learns yours (like what abreviations you use for an app or file)
But before long it's all second nature. And this is coming from a cranky old guy who's far from a computer whiz.
But I think the review below uses an unfair example. Yes Safari (or something else that lives in your dock) can probably be accessed as quickly that way. But what about the vast majority of apps and documents and photos and adresses, etc. that don't live in the dock?
I did some experimenting for fun. I went after some apps and documents I use occasionally, but not everyday.
From a dead standstill, using the mouse/finder method took an average of 15 seconds. Using quicksilver took an average of 4 seconds.
11 seconds may not sound like much, but lets say you use it 10 times a day, five days a week. That's saving about 9+ minutes a week. Or just about 8 hours over a year. To me, that's time worth saving.
Plus I find Quicksilver a lot more fun to use than the finder (subjective, to be sure).
I also compared it with Butler (which I found less intuitive and more annoying) and Launch Bar (more limited and not free). Both are excellent in their own ways, but this was the one I stayed with.
For those who want a compromise - something simpler than Quicksilver to learn and use, but still free and fast at opening apps and documents, ABC Launch is quite good. A lot fewer bells, whisteles and options, but faster to become second nature.
But for me, I like the fun of the constant development and additions, and the fact that I'm always finding new ways to make Quicksilver work even better for me.

Actually you're quite wrong. Because Quicksilver covers documents and other files as well as apps. I work on a number of different large projects simultaneously. If I were to put all the documents, files and apps I might use in a given day in my my work into the dock I would literally have to keep several hundred items there.I don't understand your hostility towards this application, or towards those of us who like it and find it useful. It's fine that it doesn't fill a need for you. But to attack a free app that many of us find a boon, without using it yourself seems bizzare. As does your 'rating' it negatively on things like stability and price when you've never used it. It seems like you're taking this app very personally!
As for your somehow magically knowing how fast I learned to use Quicksilver, I can only wish to have your psychic powers one day! :-)
As I said in my post, I did continue to learn the fine points over a series of days. But the basic function as a launcher for apps, documents, files and images was very simple stuff. Anyone who has used a launcher before should be able to pick this up very quickly.

Quick correction. In checking your earlier post I see you did not rate price. I appologize for that mis-statement. However, you did rate stability and other factors on an app you hadn't tried, which still seems odd and outside the spirit of the rating system.Sunday, August 20 2006 @ 11:01 AM PDT

Excuse me for pointing out the obvious, but if we're talking about apps you rarely use, then you won't save 11 seconds 10 times each day. Any app you use ten times a day should be in your dock. I'm sure if you were honest you'd admit you exaggerated just a tad when you insisted it takes only a few minutes to learn this program. Nevertheless, I stand by my comments -- if you dislike using a mouse and need a hobby, this is a great toy. For the rest of us it is a waste of time.Reply to This
