Converting a colour image to grey for professional printing is not quite the same as only printing the black plate.

While this will certainly be useful for printing proof copies, I tend to think it would be much better to use Photoshop, together with a professional plugin such as theimagingfactory's ConvertToBW Pro. This gives you much more control over the delicate balance required to produce a professional greyscale image from a colour one.

I'm not trying to denigrate the author of this software. Kudos for doing the work. I do think, however, that this solution will appeal more to "home" users of InDesign than professional ones.

A good idea, but ... - Woman

It doesn't say it renders ONLY the black plate. It says it ONLY renders TO the black plate. I haven't tried it yet, but you may have misunderstood the description.

Thanks for the feedback!

The current version, 1.0.6 does not simply print the black plate. Instead, it relies on InDesign's built-in color conversion functionality to convert the color image to a true grayscale on the K-plate only.

Of course, if you need extra control (e.g. applying curves), this tool won't help you - you need to use Photoshop for that. But if you need a quick conversion to black, which should print OK in many cases, then this is very fast and easy.
