Unfortunate/improper Political Slant

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Contributed by: st3phen Thursday, July 20 2006 @ 03:46 PM PDT

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: 6-12 months

Recommend Product: NO

The product is a decent one. I used it back before it got it's name and when it was Mac-first. I find it reasonably easy to add feeds, etc, to the application.

What saddens me is that the application comes preloaded with a large set of politically-oriented, one-sided video feeds pre-loaded in it's library. I don't think this is the proper vehicle for this kind of message.

You may feel/think one way or another about politics, but I'm not sure how appropriate it is to deliver the product with such slanted content. I mean, if you're going to deliver a Macintosh application which is supposed to be a video player, why load it with political content at all? It's a computer program.

And if you're going to make it political, at least either provide balanced content and/or give potential downloaders a heads-up that they're not just downloading an application like the other 99% of apps here on VersionTracker... they're downloading what appears to be a propaganda machine.

Now, I'm sure some people may scream about politics, one way or another, in replies to this. So let me be clear: I'm saying it would be a better Macintosh app if it shipped with apolitical (that's non-political for those of you in Rio Linda) content. Due to the political content, I'm going to have to click the 'Not Recommended' button.

Unfortunate/improper Political Slant - wgscott

When I first opened safari I found it full of various bookmarks for things like CNN and other 'news' organizations that shill for the state department. I haven't looked to see what 'propaganda' is contained in this, but I can guess that the problem is that it doesn't produce the usual global corporate and pentagon pro-war cheerleading swill.

Unfortunate/improper Political Slant - shawner

This is not a new issue- there are a lot of various bits of software that I've really wanted to like but come preloaded with a message (usually Christian) that I don't agree with. I've had Christ shoved down my throat all my life and I'm sick of it, but if someone wants to limit their audience by embedding their bias, they have that right. I haven't yet seen what the preload is on this software, but I'm assuming it is a liberal slant, as non-liberals would, of course, be the first to cry foul about something insignificant.

Despite the rapidly eroding freedoms in the United States, its citizens still have the right-- and I would argue the duty-- to speak their mind.

I could see objections if Democracy came preloaded with hardcore porn or snuff films, but political content? Hardly...

Free Speech? It's not a book. It's not a magazine or newspaper. - st3phen

If it were a book or a magazine, etc, I could read the cover and learn what it was about before I got it, right?

DTV/Democracy Player bills itself as a video player. It fails to mention it's political contents on it's "cover." Instead, it sneakily & specifically avoids this. Then, an unsuspecting user downloads this Mac program to play videos... and they get a sack full of political propaganda.

There's a time and a place for free speech. 'Participatory Culture Foundation' can fill their program full of all the propaganda they want to. And they can try and hide it until unsuspecting people (who think they are downloading a video player) find it full of propaganda. But they probably ought to at least mention this on the "cover" of the product (i.e. their website, VT, etc).

And on the flipside, free speech means I have the right to call them on it on VersionTracker. People who aren't interested in propaganda should be aware what comes in this package so they can make an informed decision.

What everyone seems to have forgotten, is that propaganda, by definition, is produced by governments, not citizens. Don't be a sheep led to the slaughter—do you're own thinking. Freedom starts with being free.

Unfortunate/improper Political Slant - MrMediocre

The program is called "Democracy" -- something anyone complaining about video content would know little about. It's slant is evident in the name of the application, and who needs that?

There are no videos imbedded in this application. There are several feeds or channels that demonstrate how one can subscribe to rss feeds which do not force you to download anything, or even look at them.

As is the case with any set of demo bookmarks, I tend to delete them before bothering to look.

Excuse me, but - st3phen

Excuse me, but when did leftists get granted ownership of the word 'democracy'? Democracy is a form of government (though not the form of government the United States uses, which is a representative republic). The Democrats are a political party. Try and understand the difference.

And, you apparently incapable-of-reading-comprehension responder, somehow fail to understand that what I am bringing-up has little to do with freedom of speech, or the governmental form of democracy. It has to do with sneakiness and cheap political tricks.

I was going to go further here, but I've said all I have to say about what's wrong with what they're doing multiple times. Why repeat it if the respondents are clearly incapable of comprehending what I have written and how I have gone to great lengths not to say anything negative about liberalism/leftists?

Excuse me, but - MrMediocre

And I'm just making note of the possibility that there are differing perceptions.

You see the bookmarks in the program as a "cheap political stunt".

I see them as demonstrations that I pay no mind because I (usually) have better things to worry about.

How very democratic.

In conclusion, you, sir, are hilarious.

And if they are just "demo bookmarks," why must they contain so much leftist propaganda? If what you're saying is to be believed, then there should also be right and central political content, cooking shows, and needlepointing bookmarks, too. Your position is untenable. You know they're leftist propagandists. Just look at the benefactors on the publisher's website. You can't deny that this application is little more than a political trojan horse as-shipped.

Imgine thinking freely. - mannyrules_dotmac

You dumbass, propaganda is (I'll say it again) by DEFINITION, produced by governments, not citizens. What you call propaganda is merely a programmer excersizeing his or her right to free speech both in the lanquage of the computer program itself, and in the form of sharing his or her particular viewpoint on the crisis of values that is being thrust upon the world by a monkey named G.W.. Let me recommend that you sit in a quite place for a while and try to identify the source of the childhod beliefs and programming that are generating these feelings, which then manifest themselves as your actions to type these words over and over again into your computer, while still failing to comprehend the illogical point you repeatedly make. I am certain that if you take this excersize seriously, you will discover that the things that you allow to make you angry or indignant are really just your perceptions based on a slanted value system you picked up as a kid. (i.e. better to fight back, than look weak, rather than, let's see how we can solve this situation once and for all through diplomacy and tolerance -- although acceptance is much more effective than tolerance.

In other words, grow up.

You Marxist-Leninist El Stupidos need to register your lunatic tirades with Airhead America. You know, that radio station outlet that nobody listens to and that had to stay afloat by "borrowing " $900,00 from a N.Y. Boys & Girls Club. Don't dampen your diapers too badly when the Funny Company of Pelosi, Conyers & Murtha fail to capture control of the House in Nov. At least you'll have Democracy Player to get all nostalgic over.

Failure to capture what? Quite arrogant of you, I think. And now, please pick up your fork and eat those words. People are sick of derisive, contrived nationalistic jingoism.

Unfortunate/improper Political Slant - tcrawford77

After reading this comment, I decided to download this application and investigate the claim of improper political slant for myself.

Let me just say, I was shocked by just how correct “st3phen” was.

Upon first load of the application, I was presented with the appalling musical opening to the early 90's series "Blossom". Most of you may think this to be a harmless, prime time jewel from the past. But, upon closer inspection, you’ll find it’s embedded with hundreds of wacky, far-left messages.

In the very first scene of the clip, is that a sombrero I see? Obviously, Blossom supports amnesty for illegal immigrants and loony liberal ideas such as a living wage. My housekeeper lives just fine off the $2 an hour I pay her now.

In another scene, you see her dancing with a young gay man wearing a leather jacket (everyone knows that only gays and Tina Turner wear leather). Obviously, Blossom is trying to subliminally implant the idea in our children’s’ minds that being gay is an acceptable lifestyle choice. Last time I checked the Bible, it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

And I almost fell out of my chair when I saw her dancing with another girl dressed in red - obviously a communist. Everyone knows that communism is the Middle English word for terrorism so, basically, Blossom is inviting Saddam Hussein to launch another terrorist attack on our nation.

Despite all this, the final insult for me was the scene where Blossom is tap-dancing on the piano. If you look carefully at her feet, you’ll notice she’s actually spelling out, in Morse code, “Universal Health Care for everyone.” Sorry Blossom, but in our country you either sink or swim. That was the philosophy that Jesus brought to our country when he founded it with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and that’s the way it’s going to stay.

I am so disgusted that anyone would create an application and embed it with political slant and opposing opinions. Everyone knows that a democracy only becomes more complicated when you have more than one viewpoint. Let’s keep this political propaganda off our Macs and on Fox News where it belongs.

Hum. And just what constitutes this "controlling widespread media"?
Would that (also) include the Far Left NYT?... Or maybe CNN?... PBS?...NBC?... Washington Post?... LA TIMES?... George Soros? ... Air (Chap11) Amerika?.
BBC? (lol) Oh, and let's not forget CBS... Bastion of Unbiased journalism.

The simple fact is, FOX News is NO MORE slanted to the right than EVERY OTHER media outlet is slanted to the Left/ Far-Left. - FOX is just s smidgeon more upfront and honest about it. Please name ONE anchor or Journalist from ALL of the MSM who is blatantly Conservative. I don't need a Euro-Weenie/ Marxist-Lite Video-streaming app on my Mac. Many of you do, obviously. But if you do use it, be warned. You are being watched by the Racist Nazis controlling our Government.
"Useful Idiots"? - You were quite correct, Mr. Lenin.
"Democracy" indeed.

Of course this is just my opinion, but my own slant is progressive, and so of course I approve of Democracy Player's slant, and wish more developers felt the same way. We have gangsters in office and running our corporate media, the internet is not so "tame" as these giants profess to be, and I'm glad of it.

If you don't like it, go watch Fox!

I am a republican and I see nothing wrong with Democracy Player. I am all for free speech no matter who it saying whatever. That even goes for people who voice their dislike for something. I will not make a personal attack on someone for exercising their free speech rights because if you do then you are kind of killing your own point, don’t you think?
