Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: NO

My recommendation: Give this version a pass.

I'm a long-time Acquisition user. It's been stable, found most of what I searched for, and hasn't hogged resources on systems with reasonable resources to begin with. I used it for years on an iBook G3. Then a G4 with OS X 10.4 and 1.2gb RAM. Earlier versions performed well on my MacBook Pro 1.8ghz w/ 2gb RAM.

The application itself is easy to use, and has some great features, which made it my preferred (GUI-based, anyway) gnutella client.

The latest version, however, leaves much to be desired - especially basic functionality.

Acquisition is able to connect and download torrents, it fails to connect to the Gnutella network, displaying the red "Connecting..." status message forever. Needless to say, you can't search or download non-torrent files. I checked my router to be sure that the UPnP support worked - the router had no problems opening ports for Acquisition. I tried also at another location, again, with no success.

Support for this application is now totally non-existent. Originally, I figured I'd find a support forum on xlife.org where the old support forum used to be. Now, apparently, it no longer exists. I therefore took the next step in attempting to email the developer. Perhaps he's slaving away on a new release, but I can't tell, since it's been days since I've sent the mail, and I've yet to receive a response.

Finally, I attempted to reinstall the app, in case the latest installation went awry. No joy.

I'll stick with it a little while, with hopes that it will improve. When it worked, in older versions, it was a great little tool for finding files. But I'd recommend that new users give 131.2 a pass.

Problems abound... - BJF

I had some problems with this version when I first installed it, but I downloaded the latest Java update for Tiger, did the DiskWarrior thing, repaired permissions, etc., and now everything is working perfectly. I haven't tried a torrent yet, but gnutella is fine. The partial downloads that got fried before continue where they left off once I search for and attempt to re-download them.

I tend to also skip several updates at a time because of the occasional problems that occur, but I am getting the best performance I've seen since about a year ago. One factor that might explain it is that I moved from 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 by doing an archive & install. Must've been some Panther crud holding me back?

Good luck!

I am running the latest version of Java, and did the usual "repair permissions" etc. Still no joy.

After updating to this version, I just get the red Connecting message and no connections. Further, it clobbers my internet access entirely. I have to reset my router to have web and email connectivity. I've turned uPnP on and off and fussed with a couple other router settings, but no joy. The app sees a router problem (notes this in the Prefs pages, with link to their web site for setting up the TCP/UDP ports, which are unchanged from before). I did update to 10.4.7 a few days ago, but the previous version was working OK . . . except that it refused to shut down entirely when I tried to quit it in order to upgrade. It wouldn't complete writing my list of incomplete downloads (but didn't hang to the point that force-quit showed it being unresponsive).

Need to yank this review and update. Developer emailed a solution that works - trash your Application Support/Acquisition folder. That fixed it. I disabled UPnP and manually configured the router to forward the ports to my IP.

The update to 131.3 still didn't fix things. The Developer contacted me (thanks D.W.) and suggested trashing Application Support/Acquisition. Now it works like a champ.

Need to revise my review accordingly.
