It actually does two things (among others) that cannot be done with any of the free apps. It joins and splits files greater than 2.5 gigs in to parts greater than 2.5 gigs

I believe Machacha has a maximum chunk size of 1.95 gigs but I'm not aware of a ceiling for joined files.
