As one who held on, and held on to OS 9, the move up to OS X was a whole new world. ("Permissions"? What are permissions?).
It was about a year before I learned of OS X's automated self-maintenance routines, which run at times of the day, week and month when my machine was off.
You can imagine the performance boost after I cleared a year's worth of gunk by running MacJanitor for the first time.
Or, if you don't have this application yet and therefore can't imagine, let me tell you...
I don't use benchmarks or performance tests, so it's all subjective. But gee, my Mac just seems to fly now. And did I mention it was idiot-proof?
For an OS X novice who uses his or her machine during the day only, this is exactly what you need.

I can't believe anyone else on the globe still uses OS9. OSX is far superior the Mail has been seriously upgraded to an actual application you prefer after the few dark years of poor Mail service. There is a lot more. You seem to be reluctant to regularly update your machine. Those days are gone, you have to update in order to patch all the fixes and upgrade security. If you are a little scared relax. Buy a book written by Robin Williams if you are at a novice level. She is the best author who knows how to speak to new users. She writes books for each machine, you may have to go to Amazon to buy a used one if your machine is old but it will help. The 'mac osx missing manual' (actual title) is another good book. Your mention of what permissions are is indicative that you need serious help. You need to have Disk Utility in your dock and run 'fix permissions' on a regular basis and after you run Mac Janitor. Also you will more than likely need to increase your ram in order to run OSX effectively. If you have only the standard 256 MB ram you need to at the very least double it, the very least.Reply to This
