Combo killed me!

Feedback Type:  Review

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

I went from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 via downloading the PPCCombo updater from the Apple.com website (149MB). Upon completion, I restarted to a blank grey screen with the familar spinning startup graphic and Apple logo. After about 10 minutes the fan started reving up to it's familar LOUDNESS, then the Apple logo changed to a circle-slash. I left it in this state for another 10 min, and did a force shutdown via holding the power button down.

I then went through trying to restart it several times, flashing the PRAM (3 chimes), and desperatly trying to get the DVD tray to open via holding down the "C" key. Finally after 2 hours, I had to go to Fry's and buy another hard drive (4th one for this G5). I poped the new HD in next to the old one, manually open the DVD tray via prying the door open, and got it to startup on the DVD.

I just spent 5 hours getting this dual 2GHZ G5 back up on a fresh install on the new HD.

ALL IN ALL: I've come to expect this kind of experience from my two G5's. I have the exact same machine in my office, and it has done the exact same thing twice. The HD I bought today is the 5th one since I bought the two G5's.

People trying to get the CD tray to open by pressing "c" should not be allowed to comment updates.

Why don't you go and buy another five HDs at the same time that way you can get a bulk discount... and they will be ready to go when you need them ;-)

or

You could just go back to using a PC :-b

Combo killed me! - Born Yesterday

For those that didn't know, the "C" is only meant as a way to start a CD/DVD, not to eject it!

Hold down the mouse key upon power-up to forcefully eject a CD/DVD from your internal drive.

And lastly, if you have to BUY a new HD because you mangled your OSX files and are too clueless to re-install the OSX from DVD again, please send me all your money instead.

For Mac newbies, the Finder's Help will prove invaluable for keyboard shortcuts and tips!

Combo killed me! - Selfinflicted Drama

like the other said, hold down the mouse butten at startup to open the drive.

and ever wondered why theres a tiny hole in a every CD/DVD drive? its to insert a paperclip to manually eject a disk while the machine is off.

your G5 came with a book called "manual". i suggest you read the section called "trouble shooting".

but i'm happy to take that "crappy" machine off you hands.....for the price of a new harddisk

I don't understand why you have to keep buying new drives. You should be able to just reformat the "old" drives and reuse them. If you don't understand how this works, you need to go to an apple store or find some kind of Mac tech who does.

If you drives are actually being physically destroyed, you have a bigger problem with you power supply that you need to have fixed ASAP
