You can restore full functionality for Mplayer by downloading an older version of the programm. I have used

ftp://ftp1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/MPlayer-dev-CVS-050904.dmg

from February. The image containes the progamm. The about box states that I use 1.0pre8, and the (old) player shows the new interface.
