You can save to version 6 but not version 5 which is a little weak. A lot of small printers, students still have version 5. It would have been nice to be able to export down to at least version 5 with some features limited.

Quark ARE insane! - Weston Mason

We use versions of Quark from 4.11 through 6.5 because we have to be able to send files to European agencies and they are still on Quark 4. This means that we still need Quark 5 to bridge the gap between 4 and 6. There is no way we are going to buy into the Quark 7 method of saving to 6 then to 5 then to 4. What a waste of time! Quark have done this deliberately to make sure they can milk the most money out of their customers. They know that everyone is using different versions. Can you imagine if Adobe Illustrator (for example) would only allow you to save to the previous version ONLY? What a disaster that would be.

Now, here is an interesting point. Quark 4 and 5 are Classic applications and Classic will not run on the new Intel systems. So, kindly tell us Quark, how exactly are we supposed to work with older versions in the future?

<<insert the sound of crickets here>>

Ok my bad it does export in xpress6, I didn't looked well (even if this "project" thing is a bit misleading) but lt doesn't export in quark 5 or 4. The illustrator example is a good one, what are we supposed to do with people/printers/companies who didn't upgraded? (and it's something common: xpress doesn't have real new features since version 4 so why paying for nothing?).
I was a bit quick with this comment but it still misses so much features, like real psd import, with transparencies to name just one...
Well, it cannot compare with indesign.

Not to boost Quark, but you may want to consider this: Before ragging on Quark, you may want to consider InDesign only allows backsaves one version as well.

Yep, same as Adobe: InDesign can save only one version backwards.

So You can not save CS2 version to InDesign 2 or 1.5 or 1... How dum is that...

Hmm...Do we actually want to have this opportunity? Multiple versions cause multiple issues with fonts, pictures, layout and so on.

I understand that working with many different players is easier if everybody can save documents in right versions but think again: CS2 uses mainly OpenType (at least we do) and if You are saving document to version 1.5 in classic enviroment where You do not have OpenTypes in use.

Same thing with QuarkXPRess: drop documents version from 7 to 4.11 and You will be facing same problems.

With pictures same thing: transparency. Quark 4.11 does not understand transparency. Neither does v5.

But as I said, I understand the situation that You want to share documents smoothly with different agencies. But be reasonable in what You want.

You can open ID CS2 documents in older versions of ID. Just export your ID CS2 work in InDesign Interchange format and voila.

Please Adobe buy Quark.

It doesn't work... try it. Can you give some useful suggestions instead of knocking software you don't like? I've read your posts all over... Are you 16 year old? You act like it.

"No PSD Import" in QuarkXPress 7 there is even a palette called PSD Import and it does things evening InDesign CS2 can;t do like thumnails, layer opacity, mapping of spot colors to name just a few. PSD Import in QuarkXPress 7 rocks! Try the software before coming out with such nonsense!!!

Saving to 6 hit and miss - MacMuser

As Quark say, saving files made in QXP7 to QXP6 will not save any of the new features such as drop shadows.

The argument about not being able to work collaboratively with users still stuck in QXP4 is really without basis. That is 10 year old software and it's time to get up to date. If a firm's living relies on getting new software, they will, so turn the problem back to them rather than make it yours to deal with.

I also find opening files made in QXP6, in QXP7 can result in a massive increase in file size for no apparent reason. Saving back to v.6 then reopening solves this.

Blends do not seem to be working correctly in QXP7.

Thank goodness for inDesign, just a shame I have to keep both up to date (and I'm just a one-man-band).
