I ran some tests on the automatic reconnect feature as the AIM service drives me bloody crazy knocking off my work or home AIM session periodically if I'm in the opposing location.

It would appear that the automatic reconnect only works for one attempt after initial disconnect. So if you have an extended network outage (more than a few minutes) you will end up disconnected as usual.

I already sent another suggestion to the author so I'll ask about this if I get a response.

It's possible to log in to multiple locations at once, so that if your home client connects while you are logged in at work, you stay logged in at work. Good luck!
