remixed is right, there is an important distinction between upgrades and updates. And just for the record, the last upgrade (from version 2 to version 3) was free. I still use my old version 2 password to activate version 3. So Yazsoft have only asked us to pay for an upgrade once before, and transition in question took place about three years ago. And frankly, anyone who is going to quibble about being asked to pay $15 for three years of updates and service needs to seriously rethink their understanding of the concept of shareware.

I've stopped using software because of upgrade fees. I stopped using Saft when the developer decided to charge for making it Tiger compatible, and I only grudgingly pay the fees that PhotoToMovie charges. So far, though, the upgrade policy of Speed Download has been extremely fair. Sure, if you bought Speed Download 3 in February this year and don't qualify for the free upgrade, your wallet will feel the pinch a bit more. But as someone who has been using the app since version 1, and have only been asked to fork out extra cash once before, I have absolutely no qualms about buying Speed Download 4.
