Keyboard scrolling doesn't work

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

After hearing so many wonderful things about Firefox, I decided to see how it could be better than Safari. To my surprise, the keyboard Page Down and Page Up keys don't work. Nor does tapping on the space bar scroll the page down as in Safari and Internet Explorer. I installed Firefox on a friend's new Intel iMac, and Firefox has the same behavior. The only way to scroll up or down is to take the mouse and click on the scroll bar. I'm really puzzled because this is supposed to be one of the BEST browsers! (This problem exists in both versions 1.5.0.1 & 2. Do other users have this problem?

Works fine for me. - mmmgood

Seems unlikely that something that trivial would be broken in two separate versions. Anything that could be interfering with it?

Keyboard scrolling doesn't work - WoodyO1

I suspect it works for anyone with a healthy Mac.

Keyboard scrolling doesn't work - bobndana

I have the same problem on my new intel mac mini. Page up and page down don't work, fresh install of 1.5.02, but also happened with 1.5.01 the day I got it (right before .02 came out). I use pg-up pg-down extensively, and they work fine in safari and camino.

My mini is the first apple computer I have purchased in 20 years, and I was so looking forward to Firefox. Nothing wrong with camino or safari, just not quite there for me - the biggest annoyance in both is lack of middle button click to close a tab.

Keyboard scrolling doesn't work - Oodles

I just tried both page up and down and space bar and both did as in Safari.

Keyboard scrolling doesn't work - drc

Keyboard scrolling on FF works OK on my Powerbook (10.4.6).
So does next-screen-with-spacebar.
So does scroll-with-2-fingers-on-trackpad.

Keyboard scrolling doesn't work - Notary Sojac

Just so you don't feel like you're getting singled out, Denny, for us Firefox lost keyboard navigation on both of our PowerBooks when we updated to 1.5. The spacebar does nothing, Fn-arrow keys do nothing and the only extension we have installed on our 'Books is AdBlock Plus.

I was ticked enough when the Firefox team on purpose removed the ability for up & down arrow to take you to the start and end of a text field and replaced it with a two-key version: Apple-left arrow and Apple-right arrow, making it a two-handed command for PowerBook owners with only one Apple-key. No big deal unless you are like us and always have one hand on your mouse or stuck under your cat.

Ditto for me too. Am running OS 10.2.8.

In v. 1.5.0.1, I had issues with autofill. After typing one character, if I didn't select a previous word and continued to type, FF would hang up. The cursor would turn into the spinning colored beach ball. Had to hit force quit. Switching to v. 1.5.0.2 fixed that issue. One step forward.

After switching to 1.5.0.2, I can no longer read my Netscape e-mail. When I click on a message, the message appears to loading. However, when it's "done" loading, I see nothing but a blank white window. Only the Netscape footer shows. One step back.

Scroll Bar Glitch Partly Solved.... - mrgenki

I have no idea why I'm also experiencing problems with Firefox's scroll bar, too, but I unintentionally discovered a way around this glitch.

Up until 5 minutes ago, I had just an up arrow at the BOTTOM of my scroll bar and no down arrow. Like you, I had to click (the bar) and hold down the mouse for scrolling.

Anyway, I did a search on the Net for a solution to the problem, and discovered your post. Since your post was not directly at the top of my screen, I did a search for the word "scroll" (Apple key + F) and shazam my scroll bar suddenly had up & down arrows.

Try that, then. Do a search for any word on any page, and I think you'll get the same results.

Incidentally, my arrow keys and space bar have no control over the scroll bar, either. If I ever find a solution, I'll post again.

(I'm using an eMac with System 10.3.9 & 10.4.7)

Scroll Bar Glitch Partly Solved.... - towser

I have the same issue - no page up/down key scrolling. It worked on an earlier FF version - then stopped. Maybe there was an OSX upgrade that affected it? I'm on 10.3.9.

I also found today (as reported above) that if I am in the 'find' box after command-F , the up/down keys work fine!

Since not everyone has this problem, it must be a combination of updates that affects it.

But you are not alone, and not crazy - it did work for me in the past, and still works fine in Safari, and works if I have the curser in the find box. Otherwise, I need to scroll with the mouse. Odd.

Hope they find/fix it.

Scroll Bar Glitch Partly Solved.... - bobbyv33

I had this problem, with a healthy mac, and it drove me nuts. The solution was to turn off selecting text.
Preferences/Advanced/General first box. Unclick "Allow text to be selected with the keyboard", and voila!

Scroll Bar Glitch Solved.... - arev

Yes, this works! The Preferences/Advanced/General/ deselecting "Allow text to be selected with the keyboard" is the solution.

I found that the spacebar not scrolling issue arose when I updated to Firefox 1.5.0.7.

Having the spacebar scroll is especially important when you're using a PowerBook. I was ready to go back to Safari.

Thanks for posting the solution. You are sharp users!

Your solution also solved my problem w/Page Up and Page Down -- as others noted above. Especially frustrating since my wife and I have supported Mozilla/Firefox since before the Public Introduction -- and I'm Contributing Editor for a blog that features Firefox as #1...

Thanks a bunch.

Keyboard scrolling doesn't work - kamoroso

I found that if you turn on your Status toolbar (View > Status bar) your up and down arrows on the scrollbar will appear.
