Data Rescue has saved my butt more than once when I did crazy things to my directories, "losing" files and databases. DR pulled out the lost files and made it easy for me to proceed.
You'll need two Macs to use Data Rescue, Firewire'd together. And time: it can take hours to run a total comprehensive disk scan. But when the alternative is lost data, there's no contest.
I think DR is one of the best software products ever.

Re: Seriously great product! - Prosoft
Hey Bob, thanks for the great review... A quick note though - You can recover your data to any external hard drive - two macs are not required. If it is your boot drive that crashed, you can boot from Data Rescue's Emergency CD (in either Intel or PPC based Macs).Gordon from Prosoft

Seriously great product! - MacHound
Your statement that "You'll need two Macs to use Data Rescue, Firewire'd together" is not correct. I bought DR-II last month and it ran just fine on my PowerBook G4. I think what you probably mean is you'll need a bootable volume (for instance the DR-II CD) to start from if your internal HD is dead, and an attached target volume for recovered files. One way to do this is with target disk mode, as you suggested, but it's certainly not the only way to use DR-II.I agree that DR-II is excellent software -- certainly better than the 3.5 mice Kirk McElhearn gave it in his MacWorld review on 3-24-2006.
I'm delighted to see Prosoft keep their promise about an Intel bootable update so quickly. Strong work, Prosoft!
