Try the *FREE* version of GPG (GnuPG), works and has an installer for Intel Macs. Nothing runs or sucks CPU in the background. http://macgpg.sourceforge.net/ has the binary for version 1.4.3 and instructions to compile and install on a Mac (took me about 3 minutes and I am not a programer). http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/macgpg/GnuPG1.4.1.dmg?download has the binary (version 1.4.1).Use it from the shell, or if you aren't into Unix commands pick applications and plug-ins like GPGMail (http://www.sente.ch/software/GPGMail/) to automate signing, encrypting, etc. of your emails automatically! Links to these additional files and plug-ins are at the bottom of the sourceforge page.
It is at least worth a look of the supported GnuPG spin off of the original free PGP. It is compatible with the commercial PGP as well, and there are documents on how to migrate from PGP to it.
