49 bucks? I'll order a scanner for that much

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

This software works with my SCSI-based Epson scanner, but ruins the scan with gray dollar signs unless I fork over $49.

For the same $49, Amazon will sell me a similar entry-level Canon scanner with its own MacOS X software for my kids to scan color prints. No dollar signs to sabotage the scans.

A little less greed and Mr. Hamrick would have pocketed more money. Oh well. It's his right to price himself out of contention.

You folks with old $1,300 scanners? Before you spend $49 on this to make them work, take note of the specs you can get these days for under $300 and much less.

Do the math. - macsolu

Hamrick has put in an incredible amount of (ongoing) work to make this software the premier universal scanner driver. For you to *censored* & moan about a relatively low price is childish. VueScan has its rightful place in the Mac world -- for those who find it useful, I'm sure $49 is a small, and fair, price to pay. Especially if it is for a scanner that originally cost $1300 and is now essentially useless/incompatible thanks to neglect (or greed) from the manufacturer. Not to mention the miscellaneous ridiculous instabilities that certain scanner software (HP's, for example) continues to exhibit. In this case, VueScan is a lifesaver. Just my opinion.

If you're happy with the bundled software on a $49 scanner, then good luck to you. Some of us have more sophisticated requirements, ably satisfied by Vuescan.

$49 is CHEAP considering Hamrick's continuous efforts... - SPI...master...

I paid for my VueScan license many years ago and continue to get amazing value (and quality updates/upgrades) from the software. If you can really use a cheap scanner and be happy, by all means do it, but you'll be even happier with that cheap scanner using Vuescan instead of the (usually) poor bundled driver and software...additionally, you can ALSO use that old SCSI scanner at the same time and get some higher quality scans (though the resolution may not be as high as the cheap scanner). Remember, cheap scanners have cheap optics...and you get what you pay for...

My school bought Vuescan a year ago to salvage a very expensive UMAX scanner from oblivion with OSX. When the version changed, we were supposed to enter a new serial number, but it did not work for us. The developer's response was for us to pay another $49, when we had only had one year's use of the software. Regardless of how much effort he has put into it, this is too expensive. We decided to go with the SilverFast app instead.

Good luck with the Canon software... - jpellinovt

Unless you have Photoshop - for which you paid much more than $49 - the bundled software is a joke compared to that this can do. I paid the $49 a long time ago and this thing just gets better and better.

It's important to understand the history of this product. When the switch to OS X occurred, many of us were left with scanners for which there was no support. Then along came VueScan, which then and now offeres support for scores of different scanner brands. Although I have updated my scanners since OS 10.1, I still find that VueScan remains more versatile and reliable that the scanning software supplied by my current two scanner manufactures, Epson & HP. Maybe the price is not for all, but the software is: one software app and interface functions reliably for many scanners. But I do agree, $49 is a little higher than it needs to be.

Is there a review here somewhere? This software has kept alive my $1000.00 HP 4c (now $30.00 on ebay) long after HP stopped supporting it! So by all means, go out and buy the cheapest piece of crap you can find, then actually place a REVIEW!

Next time you post something, notice that you can post 1.) A review and ratings(after using it), 2.) A commentary (with or without using it) without ratings.

Pricing is a part of the software equasion just like quality, features, competitive alternatives, value, etc. It's a legimate area for comment.

I didn't say the publisher had no right to charge whatever he wants. I just said he left money on the table by giving me a $49-or-nothing choice, because I won't pay $49 for software to run a cheap Epson scanner that I got for free, and which I replaced for $29 (including software).
