Hi there,
Like most people who use Applejack, I love this free utility and now my disk warrior cd is collecting dust.
But I've twice encountered a strange problem on 2 different computers when using applejack. It stalls on disk permissions repair.
permissions repair starts, and then says "......*** malloc[194]: deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x50a790; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug:" and so on...
then the screen just slowly fills with periods. looks like this:
+........................................................................
+........................................................................
and so on. this won't stop on its own, so I usually shut the computer down manually by holding down the power button.
I should mention that using disk utility to repair permissions does the same thing - it stalls and I get the spinning beach ball.
so then, there are 2 things I'd like to know.
1. what's happening here? the computers in question were a 20" flat screen imac and an emac, both running 10.3.9. (I'm sorry to say I don't have more specs on hand, but I could supply them if requested). Oh yeah - both users have MS office X and use entourage for mail (the iMac user has an unrecoverable Entourage database problem). don't know if that has any bearing, but who knows?
2. Is there another way to quit the permissions repair process when running applejack? Is there an arcane command I can use? or do I have to force-shut down?
thanks very much for an awesome little utility!

applejack stalled on disk permissions repair - dave143
hmmmm, glad its not me too- happened last night for the first time on my dual-core-2 G5 after a security update (SecUpd2006-002Ti) prompted a restart. Difference is this morning I ran Disk Utility to repair and it had no problems or hangs....this app is awesome though and I am inclined to agree the problem is elsewhere- any smart'uns out there know what's happening please let us know, I need to keep AJ my go-to app after an upgrade!

applejack stalled on disk permissions repair - NO!!!!!
I manage over 100 computers and use AJ on 80% of them - I have seen this stalling issue on dozens of them only on 1.4.2 - To exit when this happens just hit Control and C you will go back to the input prompt and just type reboot or restart and continue - Much better than a force reboot.Monday, March 20 2006 @ 01:40 AM PST

You may have solved your problem by now, but applejack was doing the same thing to me after I updated iTunes, if you go to Prefrences in iTunes, and then click on Parental, and then make sure that disable music store is checked your problem might go away.Wednesday, April 26 2006 @ 05:27 PM PDT
