Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: YES

Okay, basically I find VirusBarrier to be a quality product, but it has one incredibly obnoxious feature that you need to be aware of, and avoid like the plague (until they fix it).

Secure Zone warns you every time a "non infected file" is moved into one of the folders that you've set it up to watch. I am sure it is Intego's way of saying "Hey look! We're monitoring everything that goes on here! We're working for you! Aren't you glad you bought our program?" But what makes it REALLY annoying is the pop-up dialog box pops up and steals all the keyboard inputs, so if you do like I did and move a bunch of files into a monitored folder, you'll get pop ups for the next 15-20 minutes, and not consistently. I'd acknowledge a slug of them, and go back to typing something, and have another one pop up and "beep" at me anytime I pressed a key.

No way to tell it to only pop up a dialog when it actually finds a problem. I removed my folders from the "Secure Zone" five minutes ago, and am still getting pop ups. What a pain!

I also just found out that the $70 only gives you a year of virus def updates, which is reasonable, but it's $29.95 a year beyond that, and I think that is obscene, especially given how few virus defs they need to write in a given year. And I did not find any information to that affect when I was researching the software (which, yes, I admit that I got the actual dollar amount from another review, and not Intego, so I am assuming it is $29.95).

But as long as you are aware of that, it is a good program, and I do recommend it!

Did you find any conflict with other programs on the Mac, like Windows Office 2004 or Adobe Photoshop CS2?

An update to my 3/4/2006 posting:

Apparently it is not necessary to have Secure Zone enabled for a download folder. With it turned off, I was attempting to download a file (Ancient Trijong) and I got a warning from VirusBarrier that it contained 'OSX.Exploit.MetaData' It did this before I even got the warning from Safari that I may be downloading an application.

Whether or not it was an actual virus, it does prove that VirusBarrier is watching, either for folder changes or download activity. I guess all VB really needs is better application to make that clear, and explain why anyone would want/need to enable Secure Zone (or I simply need to re-read to docs). Either way, VB does as it promises.

Now about the update costs....
