Why bother with a script if all you need to do is go to Safari’s preference menu and make sure “Open safe files” is NOT checked. Simple and does not require the download of a script.

Why bother? - dayhox

Because some people, namely my Mother In Law have trouble following directions when it has anything to do with electronics. If this saves me from a 20 minute conversation going in circles, than it was worth it to me. It is available here for others who don't want similar hassles on their own or supported machines. I also have a lab of 78 iMacs. Having this script and the source handy allowed me to make the repair on all of them in one fell swoop.

If you don't need it, don't download it.

Do Developers now have to state " Geeks needn't bother" now when creating <b>Freeware<b>??

Hats off to people like dayhox.

I for one am grateful for anything that simplifies my PC experience.

Thanks dayhox.

It is more work to download the file, open it, run it, and delete it. Than it is to uncheck the box. How is that easier?

Absolutely agree.

Have trouble getting someone to click a checkbox? Try getting them to find something on their Desktop. WAY harder. Getting them to press F11 to clear their apps away or quit everything when they can't find the F11 key... it goes on and on.

I appreciate the sentiment behind the creation of this, and I totally agree with the philosophy that keeping users out of the terminal is a Good Thing, where possible, but this just seems gratuitous.

It's also anti-productive and re-inforces bad habits, since it encourages people to download and execute an application to plug a download-and-execute issue so that the browser won't download-and-execute, as if it was the only way to work around the issue.

jeesh,
give the guy a break, he's only trying to help people. When was the last time you got off your soap box and helped someone do something that was easy for you? Sure you're smart and a Mac genius, but other than the "Smarter than thou" posts what have you done for me lately?
stoopid name though "safairy" come on.

PC experience? - artie505

You don't own a PC; you own a Mac.

I don't understand neither how providing a harder solution could help anyone. Sorry.

Open preferences
uncheck
close preferences

Those unable to do that, and there is nothing wrong with that, don't hang around on VT anyway.

Even if it's free, we still can point the readers to a better solution.

For us in the enterprise area this way is like 612 million times faster... We are using e.g. ARD to send this small UNIX command to all our 300 mac clients in like 1 second... Instead of walking, driving, flying around the country to do hands-on on all machines...

Thats one usage...

But if you are a Mac admin, you should already know how to do this. Why does it take someone else to come up with such as simple "fix" (not reall a fix, since downloading with Firefox and double-clicking manually will still cause the executable code to run)?

defaults write com.apple.Safari AutoOpenSafeDownloads -bool false
