incredible : Apple's internal superfast CD/DVD burner is not burnning that... 2 x ! only apple's original (and so expensive) dvd's are accepted to be burned at 8 X. How is that possible ? I do not dare to believe that APPLE voluntarily bridled its burners. My config : brand new iMac Intel - 2 Gigs.

on a "regular" iMac, the problem still the same.

I hoped that this upgrade should solve the "problem".

I agree with dragonslair, I've had no problems burning at 8x with HP and Memorex brand discs.

try to check if there's any upgrade for the firmware of your internal dvd. Not from apple, but from the original brand (pioneer or similar).if you have an intel mac you can launch the firmware update from windows, otherwise you can use patchburn under MacOSX.
I had your same problem. my dvd burned many brand at 4x instead of 8x. I updated the firmware and, after initially messing up something, in the end I updated the drive and everything was fine, getting 8x burning from every DVD brand.
Then, considering lame a 8x velocity when you can find 16x DL DVD-RWs for less than 50 bucks, I substituted the DVD with a Pioneer 111-D which is mac compatible from the factory (with firmware v.1.06 or better) and now I'm the proud owner of a tuned up Mac G5DP2Ghz ;)
If you have a tower, you will easy find the fool proof steps to substitute the internal DVD with a better one... you only need 5 minutes and a screwdriver.
:)
