I guess I don't get it. I understand that developers need to make money. However, when there are several good browsers available for free, why would anyone pay $30 for essentially the same thing?

Pay for a Web Browser - stevewoodward

Well, I pay for OW because I like a few of the features not found in other browsers (thumbnail tabs, saved Workspaces), and as a Mac developer I also like to support developers like Omnigroup who are dedicated to our platform.

Depends what you get for your money. In this case, not much indeed.

As long as you accept the fact that what you view as having little value isn't everyone's opinion...There are a couple of key features, that for me, was worth ponying up for.

I doubt you understand, it's really the same as freedom of speech. Either you can or you don't. Lets see now, Firefox and Mozilla advertised for for to keep them going and they got more than they expected. Opera was pay only until they got enough so they could afford to give away the current version. Safari in order to keep current one has to buy or rather own the latest version of OS X. ICab is still shareware. And there are some minor players like I believe Shira which are strictly free. It's all about what an invidual wants and whether or not he is willing to pay one way or the other, and if strictly wants free which is his choice than even free such as Safari may end up costing anyway.
