but there's a better solution IMNSHO. A haxie from Unsanity named DesktopSweeper can do this on a keystroke, thus saving menu bar space.

Among other improvements, v1.1 adds HotKey support for quick Desktop toggling.

Before I created Desktopple, I looked at DesktopSweeper, but I didn't like the idea of having to install _two_ pieces of software (APE & DesktopSweeper) for the same functionality.

True enough. But there's still the issue of menu bar space allocation. My 12" PowerBook sometimes has so little I need to invoke a nifty little app named NoMenuBar via a hotkey.

APE has many unneeded hooks - this is easy and slick, and adds the hotkey. i am sure there are more improvments and the author is very responsive to feedback.
