Jibberish from some...

Feedback Type:  Troubleshooting Report

Contributed by: webmason Tuesday, January 17 2006 @ 12:09 PM PST

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

I started using Adium yesterday and so far I really like it. But today something odd happened. I IM'ed a friend and everything she said back to me came accross as complete jibberish. I copied and pasted the jibberish into the type area and it transformed it into english. Well I was able to get through the conversation this way but it was very cumbersome (unacceptable really).

I suspect that this has something to do with encryption coming from her end, but she didn't know and I just want to be able to read what she sends. Any ideas on how to solve this?

QM? (OK?)
System Info:Mac OS10.4.4

If you are on a Mac your font caches or installed fonts are likely wacky.

To clean the cache you can search VersionTracker for 'Font Finagler' which does an excellent job at clearing out stubborn ATS caches.

To fix the font problem go into Adium's prefs and see what fonts it expects to be using and then make sure that they are there (or change them to what you have). The jibberish issue is usually related to Helvetica fraction fonts being called instead of Helvetica Regular (Roman, whatever.)

quit Adium then relaunch it, should be good to go after that - I've had the same problem on occasion...
