While the author aknowledges this request in the FAQ, he says he does not see it as "useful".

I disagree. I'd like to be able to synch sent and received messages for a given account... I sometimes send/receive emails from a iBook while away from home, and most of the time I use an iMac at home... being able to seamlessly synch the contents of the folders would be a very useful thing for me.

Please consider this additional feature in the future releases.

Thanks a lot.

I'd like to see message-level synchronization added... - Marcel Weiher

The way I currently handle this is as follows:

1. my powerbook gets mail from the server, but doesn't delete it
2. on my powerbook, Mail is setup to BCC myself

Far from perfect, but workable. Actually being able to keep this stuff in sync would be great.

IMAP is there because Microsoft (and most other email apps, altho not all) refuses to treat email like individual documents, instead they roll them up into a larger database. While you can copy that database, you can't sync individual email. Therefore, email must be saved remotely so a pseudo form of synchronization can be accomplished on the client. That's what makes it so 1996.

What would be more 2006, would be the innate and integrated ability of each client machine to synchronize with another client machine - email especially. This is not likely to happen without 3rd party vendors because Microsoft and Apple want to sell you services to do this.

This does exist in Mac OS X 10.4 - each email is a separate file, and each mail folder is a folder on the disk. Just look in the Mail folder in a user's Library folder.
