I've been using Thunderbird for over a year, first with their beta 1.0 series and through to the latest release candidate. I've never had issues with importing mail or addresses nor has the program ever caused me grief with crashes. It junks spam accurately too, something no other e-mail client has been able to do for me.

If you haven't given Thunderbird a try you should do so.
