For a year I was a Skype user but several months ago my partners and I began integrating Gizmo into my VOIP. Gizmo is primarily used for business communications since my four partners and I reside in different locations and in different time zones. The past couple of months Skype began dropping packets making our communications unbearable. We bailed and jumped over to Gizmo. Now, Gizmo is not as feature robust as Skype. Nor, does it have the name awareness equal to Skype. Plus, there's currently no file download feature. However, when we did transfer files Skype went to a crawl. So, if Gizmo wisely chooses to integrate this feature it's probably a safe bet that an e-mail with the attachment will arrive faster and not bog anything down. It's also true that international calls with Skype are cheaper than Gizmo. On the flip side I can't say I'm overwhelmed by Gizmo only charging 1 cent/minute to any call within the US when it's computer to telephone. But, it's a start. Then, there's the way Skype can use anyone's personal computer to route calls, not to mention that it's a cpu hog.
So, when it's all said and done Gizmo is our choice. We think it has tremendous potential, greater than Skype. It's an indepent decision because we have no interest in any of the VOIP companies and aren't dictated to by anyone or any company. It works for us and we'll keep using it as long as there are no unexpected problems.
