Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: NO

Just finished my 150 page thesis with Endnote and MS Word and it was a trying experience. Endnote gets so bogged down with large libraries and documents that it crashes, bringing MS Word down with it.

End of EndNote - robert_gilbert_dotmac

indeed, version 9 bogs down and makes Word vritually unusable. They still have not got it right after so many tries.

Does anyone know of a cross-platform equivalent to EndNote?

Until one comes along, our work-around is to use Endnote version 7 with Word X for Mac, and only using Word X when one actually does the formatting of references. Although this requires keeping two versions of Word on one's Mac (usually a big no-no) because Word 2004 is a must-have, this works.

End of EndNote - foofoofoo

Something to try out: http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/. It's quite a bit different, but useful too. It does have the option to download *.ris references and integrate them into the database. And best, it's open source software!

End of EndNote - heirtzler

Hi

I see that you are recommending a BibTex programme, meaning that one mus t also change word processors. On the other hand, you also also referring to "Bookends", which will work with many different word processing programmes, including MS Word.

Bookends (BE) is very stable. It does have a few neat features, such as "groups", which Endnote (EN) does not. The user support is very prompt and helpful, too. However see my comments about this program on Versiontracker.

Regarding EN:
(a) Yes I can confirm that it can be very slow with large libraries. If you click back and forth between MS Word, EN and the finder, that somehow speeds it up.
(b) It is my impression that EN V9 crashes MS Word much less than does V8.
(c) EN imports all sorts of formats, without the user having to write filtres, etc....in contrast to BE.
