From the moment of the first bootup, I decided that "SPOTLIGHT" was definitely not a feature of Tiger that I would use and love. I'm sure it has its fans, and I am not saying it is a useless feature, but I keep all of my files organized and don't usually have any problems at all finding anything.
I had been using commands (Terminal) to disable spotlight - and each time I did a Permissions Repair (routine maintenance scripts), that blue icon would be back to mock me.
"Spotless", a shareware app promising to disable Spotlight, left me with a red X in place of the blue magnifying glass (which I found to be irritating as well).
THANK you THANK YOU for this little gem - It was simple. It was fast... and I did not need to reboot to see Spotlight burn out.

Spotlight is gold! - runmad
Uhm, you decided Spotlight was not for you without even giving it a shot?Seriously, sure you can find your documents, apps, files and what not fast, but Spotlight does it way faster. You should really give it a go before deciding it is worthless. Spotlight does not have few fans out there, there are tons. And for a good reason!
If ever you need to open up an app fast, press Apple key + Space bar, type in the app (or just a few of the first characters, down arrow and enter key. Might sound like a lot of work, but it sure beats clicking away with your mouse and you won't end up with Mouse-pains in your shoulder or arms.
Once in a while remember to reset the drive in Spotlight prefs to optimize the search.
There is a reason why Microsoft copied this gem to Vista. And just wait, it will get even faster and better in upcoming OS X updates.
