A Cavet About Intego NetUpdate

I have always liked Intego's products, but recently stopped using them because of their new version of NetUpdate (a software tracker and updater for Intego products). The new version of NetUpdate includes a option by which your Intego software can be updated automatically, without the user having to interact with the updater. All well and good, but one of the "features" of this updater is that it will overwrite your licensed Intego software with new, unliscensed versions without telling you.

One Monday morning I started up my Mac to find that NetUpdate had downloaded an unlicensed copy of Personal Backup X4, deleted my licensed copy of PBX3 and installed the newer one. The next time I tried to run a backup, I couldn't find my software. When I launched PBX4, it asked me for a license code. My old X3 code wouldn't work.

I complained to Intego about it. They basically said, "yeah, well, you shouldn't have enabled that option then." Believe me, if the little check box had come with a note that said "Be aware that enabling this option will steal your legally-owned software and replace it with new stuff you'll have to pay for", I would never have checked it.

Just a heads-up for those considering this company's products.

A Cavet About Intego NetUpdate - gryphonent

Thanks for this post!!! I had that preference also enabled and the updater was just about to download the new version 10.4!!! This practice is really sneaky of Intego... well, I for one have stopped purchasing their software and will not upgrade.
