While I'm not here to defend Allume or the Stuffit file format, I find many of the comments here exceptionally annoying and inane, having nothing whatsover to do with reality or the subject at hand:
1. This entry on VersionTracker is for the Stuffit EXPANDER product, and comments should be limited to this alone. If you have a problem with Stuffit Standard, Stuffit Deluxe, or the Stuffit file format itself, you should post your comments under the entry for programs that actually create compressed files. Stuffit Expander is just that, an expander or uncompresser, and therefore, it has nothing to do with the creation of .sit or .sitx files. This program's only function is to assist end-users in accessing already compressed files, and as such, that is a good thing. Commenting on whether it does a good job at uncompressing is one thing, but ranting about whether the program should exist at all is simply and plainly idiotic.
2. Stuffit Expander does not simply uncompress .sit files, it is a MULTI-FORMAT EXPANDER and UNCOMPRESSOR, and because of that, it's usefulness extends far beyond it's ability to deal with the Stuffit format. Even if the Stuffit file format were to die tomorrow, many would still find the Expander program useful for dealing with a whole range of traditional Windows, Unix, and Mac OS compressed file formats. The built-in functions of OS X to deal with compressed files via the GUI are still quite pathetic, and third-party applications are still very much a neccessity. Whether the program does a good job at handling multiple formats is something to be evaluated, but to pretend as if the program's only purpose is to deal with .sit or .sitx files is to evidence an ignorance of gargantuan proportions.
3. It's been pointed out before, but some seem to have missed the fact that the expander can be obtained DIRECTLY from the Allume FTP site, without the need to go through any sort of registration process. Here are the URLs again:
Expander 10.0.1:
ftp://ftp.allume.com/pub/mac/Stuffit/For_MacOS_10.3_and_later/stuffit_exp_1001_x_install.dmg
Expander 9.0.2:
ftp://ftp.allume.com/archive/mac/Stuffit_Expander/stuffit_exp_902_x_install.dmg
You also have the option of simply going to ftp.allume.com and navigating the directories to the files.
FYI, Expander 9.0.2 works perfectly well under 10.4.3, so if you're having problems with 10.0.1, just uninstall it and roll back to 9.0.2. There is no particular reason that anyone has to be using version 10.

Alllume is about as sleazy as possible essentially demanding opt-in to email spam. While the link provided here works it is not provided on the site. I suspect that they are driving potential users away with their heavy handed tactics. Were they not so sleazy I would actually pay for their software.
