Why wouldn't sleeping the machine be good enough? I mean, I've left it with a dead battery for 2 days asleep, plugged it in, and all was well.

Sleeping not enough - Jolly alias Patrick

Hmm just imagine an mac mini that's asleep but then looses power. You still can continue where you left off.
