New dual layer PowerBook drives report bad sectors

Feedback Type:  Troubleshooting Report

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Have been using MtR for a year with no problems at all. Just got one of the new AiBooks with DL SuperDrive. Now, every RIP reports bad sectors. Used to see that error occasionally on badly scratched discs -- now happens with every disc I rip. Hmmmm.
Maybe needs an update to truly support this new drive?
Anyone with a new dual-core 2.5GHz G5 have this new problem (same basic SuperDrive in that machine...)

Make sure you've set your DVD drive's region by playing a commercial DVD movie with DVD Player and choosing a region when prompted.

You might want to try an alternative program called DVDBackup. It essentially does the same thing. Although is an older program, it may work for you in the interum while MTR is not. I don't know why Versiontracker no longer lists this the app DVDBackup, but you can find it at macupdate.com at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10757

Yes, I have a Dual 2.5 GHz machine and have had similar problems/error messages, but so far it appears not to be happening on EVERY disc, only certain ones - brand new ones.

Which DVDs? Most likely new Arccos protection. I just bought a DVD today and it won't copy for a backup with "bad sector" errors. Seems the DVD has Arccos protection (new version that MTR doesn't support.

I use this to backup DVD's all the time without a problem. I have it on a Mac Mini with superdrive with 10.4.3 and on an imac g4. i did run into a problem with the movie Stealth. It gets to 133 mb's and wont go any further and it slows down your system tremendously due to the DVD malfunction. I had to cancel the rip in order to be able to get here and write this. Definitely some new sort of protection as I just got Stealth today as a gift and it is brand new, not one scratch. I tried it with arrcos and without and i also tried just doing the main feature with and without arrcos and the same problem ensued every time. What to do when you get to the end of a rip and it says bad sectors:
1. open the video ts folder with your dvd player to check the rip, sometimes it plays just fine despite the warning. make sure to check all chapters.

2. in the event the rip will not play all the way through then rerip using arrcos and if it still does not work try it again with just the main feature with arrcos. I actually had to do that on one of my dvds as there was something in the special features that just would not be ripped.

Also I assume some dvd's just cannot be backed up. I bought a Jet Li movie called The Legend 2 and all it did was make MTR quit midway through scanning.

Hope this helps.
