AppleScript error w/OS X 10.3.9

Feedback Type:  Review

Contributed by: ffooky Monday, November 07 2005 @ 02:33 AM PST

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

"hdiutil: convert failed - File exists (1)"

I get this when trying to update either Firefox 1.0.7 or 1.5RC

I presume this is a problem with the change in AppleScript between Panther & Tiger but can you advise a solution ?

Cheers.

You are not updating the latest nightlies (1.5rc has been released a week ago and is not updated any more). The latest nightlies are called firefox-1.6a1.en-US.mac.dmg. Please click on the Update URL button in the Preferences pane. This will automatically change the URL to the latest nightly.

Please check the Read Me that is built into FireFix (at the very least, read the bright red text in the Preference pane to avoid these problems).

I did read all the Read Me as a matter of course before running the application, did click Update URL, did get and continue to get the error I reported above.

The updated URL is:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-1.6a1.en-US.mac.dmg

which is just what you said it should be, so why does the error continue to occur ?

I can't say I care for your condescending and patronising attitude but I won't be the one looking stupid when this turns out to be an error with the coding.

Cheers now.

Sorry if my reply offended you. It certainly wasn't meant to come across as condescending. I simply responded to what you actually wrote, namely "I get this when trying to update either Firefox 1.0.7 or 1.5RC". Those are not the latest nightlies and FireFix has not been tested on them. That's why I pointed out that you should update the URL.

Now you write that the same error occurs with the proper nightly. However, I cannot reproduce that error. I downloaded Firefox repeatedly and it always converted the disk image without a hitch. I also have not received any other reports about this particular error. I'm not saying that the error is not real, but I have no explanation for it.

I cannot exclude that your previous installation of the old nightlies left a locked or corrupted disk image in the tmp folder. My suggestion at this point would be that you fire up the Terminal and type the following "rm -r /tmp/*.dmg*". For good measure, run "ls /tmp" to see whether there's any dmg file left. Then try and run FireFix again with the 1.6a1 nightlies.

I really hope this helps, -Reinhold

Sorry for misinterpreting your previous response and thanks for taking the time to try to help me.

Running "rm -r /tmp/*.dmg*" gives;

rm: /tmp/*.dmg*: No such file or directory

and "ls /tmp" shows no .dmg files.

I tried downloading from <http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-1.6a1.en-US.mac.dmg> and get the same AppleScript error when running Firefix on the Deerpark application from that (though is that to be expected ?)

It seems that Mac OS X 10.3.9 is to blame. Other people are reporting hdiutil convert problems as well (see e.g. http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=38035 or http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?t=5995). I'll investigate some more though.
