Pardon my ignorance please, but why/when would someone want or need to change said MAC address?

Well for this: for a lot of providers the MAC address is the way a user identifies itsself to the network, providing the user with an ip-address in return.
This process fails, when you buy a new computer or ethernetcard. Instead of trying to call your provider (in my case that can take days), it is much easier to change the MAC address of your new computer, into the old address.

What For? - kahuna_is_no_gmail

Some net works will only let some Mac Address access certain privileges so by change your mac address to something more useable like say someone else's you can have the same access as them
