Why not use ClamXav? It's just as effective and it's free!

Why bother with Virex? - ClassicUser

Because ClamXav can only DETECT viruses - whereas, Virex (and Norton AntiVirus) can actually repair damage done to files which have been infected.

Not to mention, the commercial products have a great deal more functionality built-in (automatic scanning, etc.). ClamXav is a _great_ product, but for those who need additional functionality or features, Virex is a great solution.

Why bother with Virex? - redage

I have a MAC since 1990. In That time I had 2 ( two ) viruses. One in 1994, and one in 2004. They both had been the same MBDF A, or such.

Should anyone reply with an effective solution to getting Virex 7.2 uninstalled, please let me know.

Have been trying to find the uninstall instructions for WEEKS and not one effective answer has been found.

While I definitely agree with this statement, I really don't know of any "trusted" names in the anti-virus biz! I've tried Norton - BIG mistake - I demanded a refund and received it as soon as possible.

I can say the only reason I use Virex on my systems is that at the time it was a part of the .mac "deal". As anyone knows when you use a certain email address as your primary address it's hard to change for fear of missing important data. By this I mean necessary contacts (i.e; in my case, Social Security, auotmatic payments, and those contacts you often lose by accident) you don't want to change for fear of a bigger headache.

Personally I think it sucks that Apple for whatever reason decided to eliminate the use of Virex but at the same time it's great they still somewhat support it.

It also sucks that McAfee won't sell this as a stand alone package for consumers. Why on earth do you have to be an enterprise to have the honor of purchasing this software? Whether intentionally or not, they're alienating consumers and that's an option tha shouldn't be acceptacle. Period!
