McAfee abandons individual users in 7.7

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Apparently, McAfee feels that individual users (and those with small networks of 2-4 machines) are no longer susceptible to viruses. Why else would they block sales of less than 5 "seats" at a time in Virex 7.7 (and 7.6, for that matter).

I suppose one could just buy a 5-seat license for $200+, but that seems a bit expensive for a small user.

... and, yes I am aware of this statistic: MS Windows = 71,000; Mac OS X = 0 (viruses, that is). Having Virex was mostly for peace of mind anyway (so that we wouldn't pass viruses back to PC/windows users.

Oh well, at least the old Virex 7.2 (v1.1) still works, even though it lacks some modern features. And don't forget about the great free "Get DAT updates" program to easily keep Virex up to date.

McAfee abandons individual users in 7.7 - mcalmus

None of the 7.x products have been easily available for individual users unless you used .Mac. I was able to get 7.0 by jumping through some hoops, but since then their online store has been as you described.

McAfee abandons individual users in 7.7 - julayok

My Virex 7.7 (the active scanner) supposedly caught a virus on my OS X.3.9 - this one:

So chalk one up for a virus on an OSX.

If you actually read your link you'll find that it is NOT a virus.
