after trying to de-install ( i had numerous problems with duplicate fonts which font explorer choked on), i found that all my system fonts were disabled. i managed to get them reactived by using font book, but it wasnt an obvious (and probably not advisable) solution.

fontexplorer has potential, but its not ready yet.
