... for a quick way of printing directory contents, you can select all content of a directory in the finder and then copy (command-c) and then paste (command-p) a text list into any text app. This works only with one level, and does not show an entire tree.

Actually, Command-C in the Finder and Command-V in TextEdit doesn't work as stated.Anyway, Command-C in the Finder and Shift-Alt-Command-V in TextEdit does the job - and it can show the entire tree, if you expand the folders in list view.

Unfortunately doing that, or using the console command that provides a similar service does not work very well for large listings. The Copy and Paste version does not keep things arranged as seen in the window (when I do this things come out in a completely random order -- hardly ever the same thing twice) and the console command does not keep things hierarchical.I would love it if there could be a way to just print or export as text, a directory just the way it appears in the window.
