Instead I get a Save File dialog upon quitting. It doesn't matter if I do in fact save it somewhere the first time (thinking maybe I have to do it just once at the beginning now). I still get it every time :-( This Workbook feature used to work perfectly in the previous version I was trying out. But not now. It's annoying as I'd come to reply on a scratchpad for my thought that I didn't have to bother saving manually.
This and actual changing of files just to view them without garbage characters (e.g. line ending conversion), is very frustrating. I'd _like_ to use Tex-Edit to _view_ text files, but always being presented with Save File dialogs I then have to cancel out of, is a big waste of my time. I DON'T want to save anything to a readme, or other documentation file.
It's a pity, as despite the flaws in Tex-Edit I'd like to have made it my main plain text and RTF editor. Now I'm looking at buying Nisus Express for rich text editing and keeping Text Wrangler around for plain text. Not as simple a solution as a better, working Tex-Edit may have provided me, but what else can I do? :-(

Workbook no longer works (Startup/Shutdown scritps) :-( - Wizardling
Hey there Tom :-)Yes, I did try to email you a few several weeks ago - no reply. But I did receive your email (in response to my comments here) yesterday, so cheers for that.
The Workbook trouble has persisted through a nuke and pave of my HD, with clean installs of the OS and TE+. Only things I carried over were a few _other_ apps prefs, not TE+'s. I tried (as of a few weeks ago) the latest beta and current stable versions. It all went wrong for me after trying out the previous few versions for a while (I take a long time to pick and choose my shareware, but I pay loyally for anything I eventually decide on).
I may try out the next stable version, but till then I'm trialling other options.
It's a bit frustrating as I can SEE what's INTENDED with TE+ and it's good - real good.
Anyway, cheers once more for you response :-) I appreciate it.
BTW - this was all on a Rev c iMac tray-loading with 512 MB RAM, running MacOS 10.3.9.

Workbook no longer works (Startup/Shutdown scritps) :-( - zunipus
I am not getting your problem in the finished version of Tex-Edit 4.9.4.If it still persists then the best idea I can think of is to (1) Drag the file 'Tex-Edit Plus Preferences' to the desktop, just in case you want it later. You can find it at ~/Library/Preferences. (~ means your home folder). There is no need to back up your Tex-Edit Workbook file. (2) Next time you start up Tex-Edit Plus it will create a new clean copy of the prefs file. Sadly you have lost all your settings but it might solve your problem. (3) Open Tex-Edit Plus and go into the Preferences window and select the 'Global' pane. Next to 'Startup Action' select Run 'Startup' and 'Shutdown' scripts. (4) Close Preferences then Quit Tex-Edit Plus. (5) Start Tex-Edit Plus again, et voila, you should get your workbook, with no need to save it when you quit. You will then have to put back in all your other preferences, but the effort is worth it.
If this fails, then the workbook file may be corrupt. Try opening the workbook by double-clicking it, or try opening it in TextEdit, etc. Copy out the text into a regular text file and save it. Quit the app. Trash the workbook file (located in the Scripts folder of Tex-Edit Plus). Restart the app, which will create a new clean workbook. Open the storage file and copy in your text. All done.
I hope this works for you. I love the workbook feature. I have been using Tex-Edit / Tex-Edit Plus since 1993. I have paid for it twice. I use it for all my text editing, except when I want line numbering (programming etc.) in which case I use BBEdit.

Workbook no longer works (Startup/Shutdown scritps) :-( - tombb
Thank you for taking time to evaluate my little application. I apologize for the problem with the Startup/Shutdown Log script. What version of TEP are you using--the latest beta or the current release version? What OS version?
The Startup/Shutdown Log feature works on all my systems and I don't have any reports of problems with the current beta. It is possible that the Preferences file lost its settings or the "Tex-Edit Workbook" file has been moved or renamed. Please try deleting the Preferences file and re-downloading a fresh copy of the TEP archive at: http://idisk.mac.com/tombb/Public/tex-edit-plus-X-beta.sit
Re-enable the "Startup action -> Run startup and shutdown scripts" popup selection and see if the feature resumes normal functioning. If not, please let me know.
Your second suggestion is interesting. TEP uses a traditional "Mac format" text engine that ignores LFs and thus you have to manually "transform" UNIX line endings (or else enable the "Auto-convert LFs" option in the Preferences dialog). Treating the "transformation" as a non-text-changing operation could possibly lead to some unexpected consequences, so we err on the side of safety with the "Save Changes?" sheet. (I will need to think about this some more--how to tell if it's a "readme" or documentation file, for instance.)
On my personal system I have a small script hooked to F13 that "closes front window without saving changes". This bypasses the safety net when I'm really in a hurry. I'd be glad to send you a copy if you wish.
You state "what else can I do?"
Of course, I assume this means you had trouble getting through to me by email. I apologize if I did not respond to your bug report quickly, but I honestly don't remember seeing it in my in-box. (It is possible that my spam filter was having a bad hair day.) Please feel free to contact me directly by email at: tombb@aol.com or tombb@mac.com and be sure to put "Tex-Edit" somewhere in the Subject line. (It's hard to keep track of the "software update tracker" sites.)
Thank you for your help,
Tom Bender
