However why not use the noaa website instead of the weather channel? The weather channel's site is so far behind timewise as to be mostly useless. The noaa site lags about 3 to 6 minutes, the weather channel is at least 45 minutes to 1.5 hours behind.

There are a couple reasons for the choice of the Weather Channel's maps. First of all, the Weather Channel offers more variety in maps, including international ones and close-up views of major metropolitan areas. Moreover, I believe the maps from the Weather Channel are easier to look at with a more intuitive color scheme and better underlying map of the region they cover.
