Podcasts now show up in library view by date added

Feedback Type:  Troubleshooting Report

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Another irritating new "feature". Under previous versions my Podcasts did not clutter up the library view. I use date added to keep track of where I am at and now Podcasts are included, previously only visible in the Podcast folder. I can't find any option to turn this off. Anyone else having this issue?

And thank goodness for that! - sjonke1

Sorry, but this not only doesn't bother me, I'm very glad it is finally the case. The main library should include everything in your library. For it to be anything else just doesn't make any sense, at least not to me, and clearly iTunes is managing the podcasts, so they are in your "library". Also note that smart playlists now do work for podcasts. The solution for what you want is to create a smart playlist with the criteria "Genre is not Podcast". Sort that by date added. Call it "Library - No Podcasts" or some such and there you go.

Also note the following solution to an issue with this - the issue is that you (seemingly) can't delete tracks from the library via one of these smart playlists, but actually you can do this. The trick to know is that if you select a track in a playlist and hold down Option while pressing delete, it will offer to delete the track from the library, not just the playlist. You can turn off the warning about this too if you wish.

Podcasts now show up in library view by date added - rcostello

I don't fully agree. Podcasts names often start with long sequences of numbers reflecting the date and pushing much of the title out of view unless you have a larger display for example

20050907 Medical Mythbusters - Allergies
20050906 Norfolk Island Murder
20050905 Children of the Lucky Country

I would prefer a check box option to show podcasts in library view rather than having to resort to a workaround with smart playlists. I understand your point about them being in the library therfore they should be visible but I much preferred the previous arrangement. It would be nice if the application gave us a simple choice.

Thanks for your suggestions and reply.

filtering the all-inclusive Library - sjk

I agree with sjonke1 that the main Library should include podcasts and any other content that's accessible from within iTunes. I can imagine alternatives to smart playlists for filtering out podcasts and other content, but I'm not convinced it's best to "tamper" too much with the main Library view as it's currently implemented ...

Smart playlists are implemented to implicitly use the Library. If there were a preference to exclude podcasts (et.al.) from the Library "view" would smart playlists honor that preference? To avoid ambiguities like that it's important that *one* playlist be designated as all-inclusive for *all* content and right now that's the Library.

Any "virtual view" of that all-inclusive Library that might unwittingly interfere with other virtual views would be undesirable. Said another way, the Library itself should never become a virtual view. And creating a "Genre is not Podcast" smart playlist as a "shadow Library" sans podcasts is how to avoid that with what iTunes currently gives us to work with. Things would be different if, say, Podcasts were implemented as a true peer of the Library. But that has its tradeoffs, too.
