1. Skype encrypts the phone call. Apparently, Gizmo does not.
2. Skype has chat capabilities. Gizmo does not.
3. Skype can send an attached file using the instant messaging feature. Gizmo cannot.
4. Skype cannot show the point of origin and destination. Gizmo can with its map feature.
5. Often the call quality is better in Gizmo.
6. Gizmo definitely works better at communicating with a party on dial-up.
There are other differences. It really appears that the Gizmo team is lagging in implementing competitive features when it comes to Skype. This in itself is quite puzzling. The best guess is that the Gizmo team wants to be purchased since Skype wanted a ridiculous $3 billion to sell out. They figure they're a more affordable deal. Then the new owner could decide what to do with Gizmo. Sorry but does it feel that Gizmo is only a gimmick in which to generate money for its owners?

I have both, and I must disagree. I use gizmo while playing online games, and since it only does the one thing - voice - it uses far less resources and causes noticeably less lag in my games.Sunday, September 18 2005 @ 09:32 AM PDT

I agee with you 100 % as Gizmo needs a lot more work. Also they need a better sales and advertising team as they will have to prove why we should want this over the competitions? This is a strike against them already as they were poorly prepared for the release of this software.Tuesday, September 20 2005 @ 12:18 AM PDT

Gizmo does in fact encrypt calls. However, they don't want reveal what kind of encryption the implemented, which I see as a strange thing.Anyway, the new version (1.1) of Gizmo does have chat. No file transfer though (at least not yet).
